A distribution center has trained packers, a box library sized to its order mix, and often a right-sizing machine. A store back room has a sales associate packing an online order between customers, a few shelves of boxes that compete with returns and seasonal stock, and no room for equipment. Whatever box sizes the store carries are the sizes every order ships in, and a box that is taller than the order ships with air in it. Carriers bill by dimensional weight when it exceeds actual weight, so that air is on the freight invoice.
Two things follow. A store can only stock a few sizes, so orders get packed in the nearest fit rather than the right fit. And nobody is going to install a box-making machine in hundreds of back rooms. The packaging has to do the work on its own.
Store pickup (BOPIS) orders don’t ship, so they don’t carry parcel dimensional weight; this page is about orders that leave the store by carrier.
MVP Box is a custom corrugated shipping box with custom pre-scored heights. We size the footprint (length and width) and the score lines to your order mix. At the pack station, the associate folds the box down to the pre-scored height just above the contents, in about one second, by hand. No cutting, no tool. Length and width stay fixed; height is what changes.
An MVP Box changes height; its length and width stay fixed. So the simplest consolidation is sizes that already share a footprint, which become one box with a score line at each height. Sizes with different footprints can also fold into one MVP Box when their contents fit the larger footprint at a sensible height, and that’s a judgment we make from your sizes and what goes in them. Some sizes stay separate.
Illustrative example, not a customer result
A store back room stocks three sizes with the same 12 x 10 footprint: 12 x 10 x 8, 12 x 10 x 6, and 12 x 10 x 4. One 12 x 10 MVP Box scored at 8, 6 and 4 inches covers all three. The associate grabs one box instead of choosing among three, and the shelf holds one stack instead of three.
The same store’s 16 x 12 x 10 and 16 x 12 x 6 could become one 16 x 12 MVP Box scored at 10 and 6. The 20 x 20 x 12 for bulky items stays as it is. Six sizes become three.

It’s simple to demonstrate and use. An associate who can pack a standard box folds MVP Box to the score line on the first order. We recommend showing it once at each store and putting a one-page card at the pack station.
Folding removes excess height from the dimensional weight calculation. Whether that lowers the charge on a given shipment depends on whether dimensional weight exceeds actual weight and on your carrier terms. A pilot compares freight on comparable shipments before and after so you see the real number.
A right-sizing machine adjusts all three dimensions and belongs where volume, floor space and support justify it, usually a distribution center. MVP Box adjusts height at a fixed footprint and needs no equipment, which is what makes it workable across hundreds of back rooms. We can model both against your network.
